Greater Hattiesburg -- Forrest County bastion of southern hospitality -- provides a cornucopia of cultural, sports, and outdoors options. Laurel, seat of Jones County, also has a downtown district on the National Register of Historic Places. Downtown Hattiesburg, in particular, provides lively venues for sightseeing, dining, and socializing, all within walking distance. Nightlife centers on places like Tuesdays at 206 for classical guitar to jazz, Walnut Circle Grill for home-grown ensembles, or the Thirsty Hippo for outdoor fun on the patio under live oaks. Downtown's Walnut Square Pharmacy & Old Time Gifts has an ice cream bar. Hattiesburg had a well-established geographical hub when fire swept through in the late 1890s, wiping out most wood frame buildings. Rebuilt in masonry materials, Hattiesburg's core soon became known for architectural style. Notable buildings include the Court Building, a Neo-Classical Revival gem built in 1910 and on the National Register of Historic Places, and the Art Deco Saenger Theater, with its original pipe organ, now serving as a performing arts venue. Other architectural magnets are Main Street's Historic Library, built in Italian Renaissance style, Hattiesburg City Hall, the Hattiesburg Depot, and the circa 1897 McLeod House, among few surviving residential structures in the Hub City Historic District.

Attractions include the Lauren Rogers Museum of Art, the Lucile Parker Art Gallery, de Grummond Childen's Literature Museum, and Hattiesburg's African American Military History Museum. Outdoors magnets include the Hattiesburg Zoo at Kamper Park, All-American Rose Garden, Veterans Memorial Park, Paul B. Johnson State Park, and Flint Creek Water Park. Pep's Point, a spring-fed lake facility, provides a sandy shoreline, canoe and paddleboat rentals, and camp sites. Hattiesburg's Beverly Drive-In remains as one of fewer than 500 left nationwide. Dining options range from Old South strongholds like Cane Creek Seafood, Leatha's Bar-B-Que, Nanny's Country Kitchen and Barnhill's Country Buffet to ethnic favorites including El Mariachi Loco and Cuco's Mexican Restaurant, Panino's Italian Cuisine, China Garden, and Sakura Japanese / Sushi Bar. Shoppers had for Turtle Creek Mall with more than 75 stores, Cloverleaf Mall, with stores such as Stein Mart, Calico Antique Mall, and the newer Turtle Creek Crossing, with Target. Laurel lodging includes a dozen or so chains. Hattiesburg lodging includes some two dozen properties with more than 2,000 rooms, from B&Bs in historic homes to national-brand motels and hotels.
